LAN
Local Area Network, a small office or private network, mostly restricted to a few rooms.

Outdated notion for notebook.


Laser Printer
In contrast to an inkjet printer, the laser printer does not work with ink but a very fine powder, the so-called toner. This is being burnt to paper with a laser and high temperature.


LCD
Liquid Cristal Display. A LCD consists of two thin lantern slides and between these liquid cristals are located. These are lighted by electricity.


LED
Light Emmiting Diode. Small light sources which can be used for the writing within laser printers and also scanners.

Low Key
Notion out of the area of photography. Low Key Bilder are underexposed on purpose and are characterized by dark, saturated colours and less but strong contrasts. Opposite: High Key.


LZW
Abbreviation for Lempel Ziv Welch. A compression agorithm developed in 1977 by Lempel and Ziv and made available for the first time in 1984 by Welch. LZW makes use of the fact, that redundancies are reflected predominantly by repetitive character strings.
