Wide Area Network. A network covering a large area. Not to be confused with W-LAN!


Wap
Wireless Application Protocol. This tanmission protocol is used to send data from the internet to mobile devices. Especially the capacity of the display and the computing power of the device has to be taken into account.

Windows
The worldwide most successful commercial operating system developed by Microsoft. Next to the well-known PC version there is also WindowsCE, intended for PDAs.


W LAN
Wireless LAN. A local network, transmitting data via radio instead of cable.Please read also LAN. The computer has to be equipped with WLAN network cards. A WLAN router or WLAN access point receives the data and acts similar to a switch Switch.

Workstation
Powerful computer, most of the time running on a Unix operating system.


WWW
Abbreviation for World Wide Web. The WWW is the graphical part of the internet and consists of HTML pages. These are displayed for the user by webbrowsers.
