What's: Firewire
FireWire Technology, als know as i.link or
IEEE 1394, is a serial interface for data transmission between computers and video devices. Firewire cables transport digital data with a speed up to 400 Mbit/sec and also power like via the
USB-Bus.
Originally, the importance of FireWire was within the connection between digital video hardware (DV), for example cameras and editing devices. Today it is also possible to connect hard drives via the firewire interface, but they are more spread in the professional video area due to the price.
In contrast to the widespread USB interface, only
Apple and Sony Vaio computers are equipped wih a firewire interface.
