What's: Linux
Linux is a free operating system which was at first developed by Linus Torvalds out of the system mimix and was made available as open source.

Due to its high safety against system crashes, linux is mainly used on servers. Nowadays it is increasingly used by individuals and in companies as an alternative to Windows.
The price for linux distribution consists only of the costs for the CD-ROM and manuals, but it can also be completely downloaded from the internet.

Without additional software it is not possible to execute Windows software under linux! There is the Emulator Wine which is able to handle windows programs. The new SuSE Linux Office Desktop Edition is also able to install and run Microsoft Office and several other Windows software.
