how do I fix boot sector error

computer wouldn't boot, finally got into checkdisk and it found all kinds of errors and got me into windows but avg is telling me there is an error in the boot sector

Boot from your XP-CD, Enter recovery-Console. Logon and tpye at

c:\windows:

fixmbr

fixboot

And how about you, Kevin? If it didn't help use the KNOPPIX command sudo testdisk

That worked fine for me even when all the other commands and tools failed.
