problem with resolution of my monitor
To solve annoying Windows errors, you might want to try a Windows Registry Check. In most cases, optimizing the Windows registry will speed up your Windows.
I can't change the resolution of my 17" CRT monitor (an old one I got from my father). It's at 1024/768 now which is way not enough for 17"... I know where to change it, there is simply no possibility to rise the resolution on my scale. all I can do is change it to 800/600. I thought CRT's could display all resoultions? What else can I do?
Although a resolution of 1024x768 is perfect for 17" CRTs, your monitor would probably support a higher value. You should install a proper driver for your monitor in order to adjust it according to its abilities. If you already installed the correct driver, your CRT might not support higher resolutions.
Maybe also the graphic board doesn't support a higher value. Try to lower the amount of colors. If you then can successfully increase the resolution (and still can see something on the screen) it might be time for a new graphics board
Exactly. And this usually depends on the amount of graphics memory on your VGA adapter. Just calculate the number of pixels matching your desired resolution, multiplied by the adjusted color depth (in bytes!). If the result exceeds your graphics memory, you know the reason for the limitation.
Example: You want to set the resolution to 1280x1024 @ 32 Bit (or 4 Byte) color depth. If you multimply these figures, you get a value of 5 megabytes. So you wouldn't be able to run these settings on an older 4 MB VGA adapter
On the other hand, a 1280x1024 resolution is - in my opinion - not recommended anymore on a 17" CRTscreen. It looks fine on 17" TFT, bur for a CRT i would suggest a 1152 resolution, which most boards/screen can display.

Sure! That was just an example to point out how resolution, color depth and VGA memory are related
It's true that such a high resolution is never recommended on a 17 CRT, even if this should be supported.
