windows xp says that computer is in danger!!!

after starting windows xp i alweays get a message that my computer might be in danger and there was no anti virus software found! help! what shall i do now best?
Does windows say that, or is there another program that gives you this message? It might be the windows security center that tells you this, and asks you to turn on security?
Do you have any anti-virus software, or none?
Maybe you can give a little more information about the message (what does it say exactly, what program tells you this, what is asked from you at that moment, do you have to choose any options?).
