even if its a german site, it has all the links to Dell, Apple, (http://www.computerhilfen.de/fachbegriffe-a-Apple.html) Toshiba, Ibm, Fukitsu:

You should check if the serial number of your battery is one of the ones that should get replaced.  Just check it, and if it's the one, send it in for a replacement. I think you can just do that on the Dell site.

Recently I've seen this video. It's interesting what happens with the batteries if they get out of control.
So put your hands on your head, scream, run round in a cricle and prey that the batteries won't explode. Otherwise you can simply sit down nearby a window and throw the laptop (http://www.computerhilfen.de/fachbegriffe-l-Laptop.html) out of it, if it burns.  ;D

Poor laptop  :o Some people really try out everything.

So if you see smoke, get away from the laptop, and find cover  ;D Don't even try to put it out, just open the windows I think. The air won't be so healthy with this kind of fire.
