ICQ, which means as much as ‘I seek you’, has been written by some Israelian students in 1996, for the software firm Mirabilis. The program didn’t really have competitors at the beginning, and was used alot. Since 1998 Mirabilis, and therefore icq, is owned by AOL. The use of ICQ has always been free.
