Compress files and folders: Save space!
Compressed files and folders are in most cases saving much disc-space. That's why they are a good solution for archiving data or sending files via email. Without extra software such as WinZIP, you can right-click a file or folder and choose "send to: compressed folder", to pack it as a zip-archive. You can also make ZIP-folders look different: See our Windows tips for that.


Convert .OGG music files to .MP3
Ogg Vorbis is a free multimedia file format. It can compress audio files with higher encoding quality at a smaller filesize then mp3, but is not yet supported by all players. But there are some converter programs available that can convert / transcode the sound files into MP3 more....


Direct X: Get the newest version
Direct X is the "core Windows technology that drives high-speed multimedia and games on the PC" (Microsoft). The newest Direct X Version is most of the time needed for new games or grafic applications. When having problems wich such programs, try first to download an actual Direct X version at the microsoft website.


Firefox & Thunderbird: Save profile data
The bookmarks can easily be safed in the "bookmark manager", but if you want to save the whole profile data, comes the freeware MozBackup in handy: Here you can save and restore the bookmarks, mail, contacts, history, extensions, cache of the Mozilla applications Firefox and Thunderbird. Firefox: Enhanced by add-ons
To make the firefox webbrowser better looking and enhance its features, you'll find on the Mozilla Addon Page many extensions, that offer new functions like a local weather display or a special toolbar for webmasters.


Thunderbird: Change the mailserver
If you want to change the webserver options like your username and password, don't look at the account-information: It is well hidden as "password manager" at extras / settings / passwords.
